I'm 14 and have Brachymetatarsia in both feet.
I had the external fixator on a couple of years ago to correct my right foot, and it was very successful and I have had no problems with it since. So I am having the same surgery for my left toe in a couple of months. I was just wondering if anyone else in the same area as me has suffered from this too? (I live Wiltshire, around 2 hours from london)

Would be great if someone could reply back to me :)

I didn't know either until a couple of years ago. Are you around the same age as me as well? I went to my doctor and he looked at it, he was just as puzzled as I was, he'd never seen a condition like it before. So he referred me straight to an orthopedic specialist. I didn't actually have pain in it, he asked me and I told him I didn't, but he still referred me anyway, depending on what age you are, they are more concerned for problems that may occur in the future. I saw an orthopedic specialist and was put on the waiting list for my operation. Sorry I don't really know a lot about how the NHS works and stuff, but thats something to consider if they won't do it free I suppose.

I had my toe broken, and had two pins inserted into side of the bones. The pins went either side of the brake, so that when the external fixator moved, the pins would pull the broken bone apart to make a gap. The body would then naturally fill the gap (I don't know the correct term for this, sorry).

If you want to know anymore then get back to me :) Thank you for replying.

2. what is it i need to do to get it sorted, go to my doctor and go from there ? but what if the doctor claims nothing can be done then what ?

3. from the time of you showing your doctor how long was it until you got the surgery ?

4. i do lots of running boxing and weightlifting obviously running i wont be able to do but will it affect the others and if it will for how long ? (you probably wont know that thought id ask anyway incase u did )

Oh, bit of an age difference then lol.

Nope I didn't have to pay for it, got it free with the NHS.

Yeah, you do go to your doctor first, thats what I did, he would probably refer you to a specialist like mine did, as he said there may be complications in later life and he didn't know a lot about it. If not then you'll have to have a look around.. I don't really know much about that though, sorry. Because i got referred straight away.

I went to my doctor, then he contacted the orthopedic specialist, within a few weeks I had an appointment with him, had some x-rays etc. then he put me on the waiting list. I remember it being about a 6 week wait. But this will vary depending on the doctor I suppose.

I got to a sports college, and do a lot of sports that involve running as well. It was a very long time before I was back running again. I spent about 3-4 months on crutches, then another few weeks after the pins came out before I was walking normally again, then it took me a while to build some muscles back up in my leg and start running again. My balance completely went in the foot that I had done as well, but it got better within time. Whilst the pins were in my foot, a couple of weeks after the operation I was told to try and move my foot around a little bit, just to get the movement back in it, so that it wouldn't be hard for me to walk again. Boxing obviously won't be ideal to do on crutches, but weights should probably be fine. Thats basically all I know really. When I first came off crutches I was only able to do light exercise, as after walking or jogging around too much, my foot would get a bit sore.

Hope this helped you out :)
