What type of pressure is it after turning burning or stinging? Have you tried to walk without your crutches, or put pressure on it yet? What types of daily activities are you able to do? Are you on any meds, if so how often do find you have to take them?

Nisha, the pressure is not so much burning anymore as it was in the first week, now it is more of a constant pressure/stinging feeling.

As for the crutches, i once fell and landed on my foot and it was an unbelievable pain, but my doctor told me to not put any direct pressure on it.

My daily activities are pretty mundane, I go outside and pet my dogs but I can't really play with them which sucks. I am planning on seeing a movie in the next week so i will see how that goes. Also sometimes when i keep my foot down and not elevated as when standing all of the blood rushes to my feet and is really uncomfortable.

In terms of medication, I was prescribed vicodin but i stopped using it 4 days after the surgery, I may elect to start taking it again, but I want to tough it out.

What about you Nisha, have you done the surgery?

Hey LuckyLeaf

Thanks for the info, I have not done the surgery yet:( I did see my doctor here in Michigan today and my surgery date will be Dec 30.  That seems like light years away, but he did tell me I will have the ex-fix. I will be having bunion surgery as well. My doc gave me a prescription for a Roll-a-bout, instead of crutches - so that will be interesting:?

Hi rightandleft

My Doc said it is covered by my insurance, but it runs about $350 to purchase but you can rent them for $30 dollars a week.  I was reading up on them and they seem interesting I have never seen anyone use one. I'll get it about a week before my surgery to practice with it (I think my kids will have a ball playing with it:))

How about another update.

Well it has been 22 days since my surgery and 14 days of turning. One thing that I have noticed is that the pain is much more significant in the 2nd and then the 3rd week. Towards the end of the second week, depending on the amount that you are turning should also be when you notice a change in your toe's length. Another bummer is that my calf is really flabby since i have not walked on it for 3 weeks. If anyone has questions feel free, because I know how it is to have a bunch of questions. Finally I have been taking the vicodin an hour before the turn this week because i do not want to deal with the pain.

I have another appointment this thursday so i will give an update and probably post another picture.

I thought I would post a picture of my foot following my appointment with my doctor. It is coming along very well as the fourth toe is longer than the pinky toe, i am turning for 5 more days and will officially be done with it. Also next week marks the end of the weekly doctor visits and from then it will more likely be every 2 weeks or so. I still cannot walk on it, he wants the bone to heal first so whenever that happens.

Oh yeah please don't mind the stuff on my toes, i am not allowed to wash my feet and it looks kind of funky

Hi Dyna, how are you doing? Have you found a doctor closer to your area or are you going to phoenix with dr. lee.

Nisha, your foot looks amazing and that is so cool that you are done and walking.

Today was the first time that i went out of the house to just hang out at the movies. I do recommend the michael jackson this is it film, it was amazing. I just wanted to say that I stopped taking the vicodin and now i barely get any sleep during the night. Yesterday I tried to sleep at 11pm, didn't fall asleep until before 1am, woke up at 3am, back to sleep, then up at 5am and back to sleep at around 630am and finally back up at around 9 or 10.

I really hope this gets better, also i stopped taking the vicodin because i was no longer feeling pain, I am looking forward to next week.

why do you think you couldn't sleep, is it because of pain or discomfort. It must of been a good feeling to get out of the house, how did you cover your foot, did you have to wear a boot. thank you

It is mostly discomfort, and rarely pain that comes and goes within seconds. I have been noticing that since i like to turn in bed, it always wakes me up when the pins touch anything, so i have to try hard and not move while sleeping.

And as for leaving the house, i used a medical shoe that has straps on the top which covers the toe, you can still sort of see the fixator but i do not care who sees it now.

Hey Luckyleaf,

I haven't looked for another doctor here. I decided it will be best to see Dr. Lee. I am going to wait until the first of the year though, because we are getting new health insurance in January and I don't want to have to worry about dealing with switching insurance in the middle of healing.

Cool, i had to switch my insurance too. They gave me trouble when they found out about my foot and they labeled it a pre-existing condition and would not cover my surgery. I had to prove that i had insurance for the last two years or so to eliminate the pre existing exclusion period. I think it was called a certificate of credibility that my old insurance had to fax to my new one.

Hi Nisha, I stopped turning on tuesday, the toe still looks a little short which is a bummer, but it is better than where it was before. I am now in the hardening stage and my doc said a maximum of 9 weeks more on the crutches. I will post a picture. As for pain, the only discomfort is when i am sleeping, i still keep my foot elevated and it starts to hurt at night, so i have been losing sleep recently.

I thought i would post some pictures of my foot after the turning phase. I am happy with the results, although the toe is still a little short, but i think it is much better than before, any comments?

Also, rightandleft as for mm's it was about 13 I believe and have you scheduled a surgery or which one are you leaning towards.

Wow! Your toe looks really good. It definately looks more like a normal foot. Honestly I think those of us with brachy are our worst critics. Most people don't go around focusing on other peoples feet. As long as your toe is not floating and the 4th toe is longer than the pinky then it looks pretty normal. I am sure that once you are able to make your foot look pretty with a pedi the few mm that it is short won't be apparent to anyone but you. My foot is looking a lot like yours. I am not disappointed with the length because I think that i went in having realistic expectations. The only thing that concerns me right now is that my brachy toe is still sitting higher than the others. I hope that when i start walking it will lay down with the others. So congratulations on being done with this part of a very long process. Your almost there!

Hi Luckyleaf
Thank you for posting pix your toe looks great, can't wait to see it after the fixator is removed. How long will you have the fixator on and are you weight bearing yet and have you returned to work yet. I made an appt with the Dr and will discuss w/him going w/external fixator. It is very difficult to make the arrangements to travel to Arizona. I wish that Dr Lee had a facility for his out of state patients which would have made it much easier to see him. keep us posted on your recovery.
