Hello. i am 13 years old with brachymetatarsia and i am planing on getting sugery using the external fixator on both feet..PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW.
*I was wondering what is the best time to get bracymetatarsia surgery using external fixator?? (do u have to be a certain age or wen your feet reaches its full growth)
*How long would i have to keep the pins in my feet?
*After sugery is done would my feet hurt real bad?
* Can i get both of them done at the same time?
* Would i have to wear anything over my feet after surgery is done? (such as a cask)
Pretty please help me i hate my feet so much! i love swimming but i dont never go cause im to embarrassed. I was invite to my friends party but i had to make an excuse cause of my feet and they were super mad at me. i love flip flops n shoes that show your feet but i would never wear them to my toes are fixed which is my dream.

Hello AprilD,
I had this surgery when I was 12, the Doctor at the time said that my feet had probably stopped growing now, and that I won't grow much taller either. It all depends on the person really, but this you will have to probably take up with your doctor
I had the pins in my feet for 3-4 months, then when I had them taken out, I had to walk on my heel for a while because my foot was still healing. The pain isn't actually that great, during the 4 months it was quite sore though, and at times it did hurt but I was able to control that with medication. You probably cannot get them done at the same time, no. I had mine a couple of years ago, and I am having my other one done in a couple of months. I left a gap of two years, but you could probably have it a year apart instead if you wanted.
You won't have to wear a cast, because it would cover the fixator, and also once the fixator is on, your doctor will encourage you to try and move it a little bit but not walk on it. This is so when you come to walk on it again, it will not be hard. Believe it or not, I had to learn how to walk again after it was taken off.
I would recommend this surgery because the results were very pleasing and now my toes look almost normal. I hope this helped
Becky
