Hi everyone!

I had my 11 week post-op appointment today, (can you believe its been 11 weeks already??) And my Dr said I could start walking!!! He told me to practice walking in the boot I have now (not a walking boot, which I thought was weird)..he said practice for 1, 2 weeks, and then I can put on tennis shoes!! Im sooooo excited! I just wish I was completely done, and didnt have to get the 2nd surgery on my right foot. Ugh, SUCH a long process, but sooooooo worth it. Its weird, because it goes sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow, yet so fast. It seems like just yesterday I was in Phoenix for my surgery.

For those of you considering the surgery. DO IT!! Ofcourse, considering I went to Dr.Lee, im going to highly suggest him. He did an amazing job and my results are wonderful, my foot looks and feels amazing!!! I have no pain whatsoever!!!! If you cant go see him, just find a Dr who is experienced and that your comfortable with. I cannot express the experience part enough. I could not even imagine having this surgery, and going through all the pain and aggravation, for as long as you have to and then having to deal with complications from an inexperienced Dr.s mistakes after surgery. My foot feels better than it did before my surgery, and thats the honest to Gods truth. Good luck to everyone considering this surgery, and I hope that the rest of you who have had the surgery are healing nicely and are having a good experience as I am!! :)

Congrats Brachybratt !!  You are doing really well for 11 weeks post-op.  I am so happy for you.  I am in regular shoes now but still walking with a limp and I am at 16 weeks post-op.  Is your brachy toe stiff?   Mine is but getting better with exercise.

Ddinardo,

When you were first able to walk, did your foot hurt? My foot is really sore, but the soreness is coming from strange places. Like, not in the area that I had surgery. Im having soreness on the bottom of my foot, right under my brachy toe, the pain kinda runs straight down. Im also having some soreness on the right side of my heel and bottom of heal. (The bone graft was taken from the left side) Im thinking it may be tightening of my achillies tendon. I haven't put any weight on the foot for so long, so Im expecting some discomfort and pain, but I just want to make sure that the pain and discomfort Im feeling is normal. Oh and to answer your question, the brachy toes still a little stiff, not like a board, but sometimes its so stiff that it floats up a little bit. Wow, thats great to hear your in regular shoes!!! Im sooooooo jealous!! I wish I was done, thats all I keep thinking, is how exciting it would be, if I didnt have this other stupid foot to finish, then I could buy my first pair of flip-flops!! ;)

brachybratt,

The first week of walking my foot felt tight, sore, stiff and weak but not painful.  And YES the soreness was coming from strange places.  Just take it slow and things will get better and better.  However, I am at 17 weeks post-op and still experiencing swelling after a few hours of walking.  Is your foot swelling like this?

Hello everyone! I actually had surgery in December and WOW!!! I'm doing great. I feel really happy for all those that have done the surgery and those who will soon have it. Reading through your messages it all comes back to me. I couldn't wait to get my cast off, then it was "the boot" and now I'm wearing sandals! Something I couldn't do for a long long time. I aslo had the surgery done by Dr. Lee and I cannot say enough about how great he is. He really cares about the patient and makes sure that you are doing the right things to get your foot better. I will try to put some  before and after pictures so all of those who are still in doubt on having the surgery can see that its worth it. Again Dr. Lee is the greatest! I'm so glad I found his website back in August of 08. Take care!!!

Mary,

Do you ever have any pain, stiffness, or swelling in your foot now?

Congrats BB! Yeah you can start walking!! How's that going for you???

ddinardo do you think you needed the 13 weeks because you are in your 40s and bones don't heal as quickly when you are older?? Just wondering???

Mary we are looking forward to seeing your pics thanks for sharing your success story!

Hi ddinardo!!

Ok, good, your post makes me feel better. I was starting to worry that something was wrong. But the more I think about it, I guess I would expect to experience some pain, because I havent walked on it for so long! My ankle is weak and some spots are still a little numb, so Im guessing that the nerves are still trying to get back to working. Its like you said, the surgery is no-joke...and the recovery time takes a long time. Im a very impatient person, and forget just how much truly goes into this surgery.

The first week of walking my foot felt very painful, so much that I couldn't even put weight on it, the pain is subsiding now, and yes, Im still dealing with the swelling. (I think we could be dealing with that for a while:(

Did your post-op Dr put you in a walking boot? My Dr didnt, he had me walking in the boot that I was wearing after my surgery, (which I thought was very strange) well, needless to say, it broke yesterday, obviously because theres a tag on the boot that clearly says "Not ment for walking" and it wasnt strong enough to endure walking  and now I am forced to wear my tennis shoe. My foot was so swollen that at first my foot couldn't even fit in the shoe!! But, now its getting a little better and Im just taking it really slow! Hows your stiff toe coming along? Are you still doing your exercises? Oh, also my 4th brachy toe still sits up a little higher sometimes....kinda floats, now where near the kinda floating like before, but its defiantly up a little higher...does yours do this, or have you seen this before? Its weird because it does this sometimes alot more than other sometimes. I was hoping that after walking on it, it may loosen things up and get it to lay back down.

Hi Ontario1!!!

Walking is going good, just slow;) Its still pain full to walk on it, but as the weeks go on, things are getting better. I think I was just naive to think I would be completely finished once I was able to walk, and in my case, walking is a completely different ordeal. Not that its nearly as bad as the surgery or recovery, I guess I just thought once I was allowed to walk, I would be able to put a shoe on and walk...and thats not the case. You gotta get yourself back to speed and get the ankle strong again. How are things going with you? Anything new? Hope your doing well!! ;)

Hi BB! glad to hear that everything is progressing at least-slowly but surely!!! :)

I have been so busy with visitors that I haven't seen my family doctor yet to ask about a referral- I am thinking August? I did email the Podiatry Canada website to ask if they had any info on doctors in Ontario who could do follow ups to brachy surgery and I have not even received a reply!!!:(

Im so happy for you and I was wondering if you did the one step procedure or the external fix? I just found out about one week ago about my condition. I thought I was the only weird person in this entire world with this problem. I can't believe so many people have it and have gotten it fixed. I think this will change my life but I am so scared of the risks involved with the surgery so please advice me on which procedure I should choose.
Thank you
