Well my surgery was done today at 7:30 in the morning, all went great. My doc said that he placed it in the exact spot that he intended to. I will not be turning for 10 days, and i have an appointment on the 13th to start distracting.
About the surgery, they used Local MAC, and I was asleep ASAP. No counting down from 100 or anything. The last thing I remember was them transferring me from the bed with wheels to the OR bed. Then I was out, until 10:30 am. I stayed in the hospital until about 1 pm. Also it is normal to feel nauseous after the surgery which I did.
I practiced with the crutches, but as soon as that happened the blood from the incision bled through the cast and their was blood stains on the bottom of the dressing. They said it was normal because I had been laying down since and when you stand up, the blood goes straight down to the foot.
I do not feel any pain, and I was prescribed vicodin. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. I did not take a pic before the surgery, but will post a pic later on.

Luckyleaf,
I am glad to hear that all went well and that it was a smooth process. I hope that you continue to feel good. I look forward to hearing how everything progresses.

I forgot to say a couple of things. First off thank you to Dr. Lee for this forum and spreading the word on our conditions.
Now for the surgery, I have a k-wire attached and since i have a short toe bone, it will not be lengthened exactly as my right foot. I will try to post a picture this weeks, but my toe and foot is covered up with the exception of my three big toes.

| i also have a kwire, inwas wondering what the hell that pin stickin out my toe was. its really not that painful unless i try to move the toe.i have on a cast because i got the bone graft procedure..i can see all my toes tho, but they are wrapped really good so i cant see if the surgery is up to my standards,,but i also had a short toe bone so i know itll never be 100% perfect!! anything is better than having a floating toe. i also had haamer toe surgery on my brachy toe. so...i guess the kwire is for that also..cant wait to see my foot, keep us posted and add pics soon luckyleaf

hey brachy nisha..
yes..my cast is pink. i love pink!! i thought about getting blue because i dont want a color thats easy to get dirty. but yes, they let me keep my nail polish on. i got a pedicure a few days before my surgery cause i didnt want jacked up toes for the whole time i have this cast.the nurse who helped with surgery said she was going to take it off, but the dr told her it wasnt a problem. i was happy, cause you can see my toes..and i didnt want ugly lil toes peeking out my cast. i had my post op appt yesterday..dr said 3 more weeks in my cast then he will take it off, take the pin out and the stitches. hopefully my bone heals well enough for him to be confident enough to let me get this cast off. the xrays yesterday showed that everything is coming along great. he told me that my last surgery may not have corrected my toe completely, but he said i did get length and it helped hjm acheive better results with this surgery. xray showed the 4th toe is now longer than pinky and alil shorter than th

Well it has been about 4 days since my surgery, I am still keeping the foot elevated, iced, and taking a shower is still sort of a problem, but i am getting better. I use a chair in the shower. The worst part is staying home all day, and my leg starts to hurt when elevated. My doctor's appointment in on Monday and we will start distraction then.
Oh yeah in case anyone wants to know my doctor is Dr. Robert Spencer, from white memorial hospital in Los Angeles.

I still need to get a photo up, the only thing is i need to reinstall it in my computer

Hi Luckyleaf!
I am glad to read in your posts that you seem to be doing well so far. I had wondered about showering, as I can imagine it would be a bit difficult. Have you seen your foot yet, or has it been covered up since the surgery? Do you work? If so, how long will you be off? My appointment with the doctor in San Diego is tomorrow morning (10/09/09). I will post to let you know how it goes. Take care!

| I still have not seen my foot, i will get a look at it when i see the doc on monday. As for work, I took 2 weeks off, my doc told me that i would be able to walk by then, but since the surgery he told me not to place any weight on it.

Hi Luckyleaf,
I had my appointment with the doc in San Diego yesterday. I was SO disappointed. He does not do the ex-fix surgery, says he won't work with those types of devices. He does the bone grafting, but said it won't be helpful to me since my toe is so short. He basically told me I shouldn't do anything because it could just end up causing me problems. He did give me the name of a different doctor in San Diego who he thought would work with me. It is so frustrating. I have been to 4 doctors in 3 months. I just felt like crying when I left that appointment.
I hope you are doing well today!

Dynagirl,
Don't give up. You may wish to send me your xrays by mail so I can give you an opinion on what ypte of surgery would work best for you. I have never had to send a patient away without good choices. Please email me if you have any questions. About half of my patients have very short toes in addition to the metatarsal. No big deal. Once the metatarsal is corrected we just add some length to the toe (only takes 20 minutes to do and you can walk on it immediately).

I had the same thing happen to me with a local dr, but i used this forum as support. There will always be doctors that say you should not do anything because they probably do not have any experience with the surgery. There are many no's before you get a yes.
But I would definitely take dr. lee up on his offer.

Dr. Lee, thank you, I will contact your office to get information. San Diego is not that far from Phoenix, so it is a possibility.
Thank you also to everyone else for your encouraging words. As many people have noted, this discussion board is so helpful. My husband is incredibly supportive, but I know he still doesn't really understand why I feel the way I do, but I know that all of you understand and it makes a big difference.

| No problem Dyna, we are all connected in a way that other people just do not get. But if I could have gone to phoenix to see dr lee, i would have done it without blinking an eye. Good luck I know you will have everything sorted out soon

Here are the pictures that i promised. I had my 10 day doctor visit and he said that i should be turning a quarter turn 3 times a day. He wanted to turn the fixator slower than normal just to be safe which i appreciate. Also he turned the fixator, it did not hurt and all i have to do is turn the device itself, no loosening nuts or screws so it is pretty easy. Check out the pictures.
I thought I would be able to walk on it next week, but I was advised not to, so i will be on the crutches for a while. He also said there will be three weeks of turning and then double that time or 6 weeks to harden for a total of 9 weeks until i get it off.Attachment: P1010122.JPG (Downloaded 630 times)

Hi Luckyleaf,
The device is much smaller than I had thought it would be. I am glad to hear you are not having much pain. Do you go back to work soon?

| I thought i would give another update since it seems the forum is a little lonely now. I have been turning and the first week was a breeze, but now as I start the second week of turning I get immediate pressure after turning the fixator.

Hi LuckyLeaf,
I agree I've been waiting for someone to say something.....
What type of pressure is it after turning burning or stinging? Have you tried to walk without your crutches, or put pressure on it yet? What types of daily activities are you able to do? Are you on any meds, if so how often do find you have to take them?
