It looks like I'll be having this surgery the beginning of next year. I have a few concerns and questions though!!

First of all, I only have this condition on my left foot.

I was wondering...
- When you have the external device on, is anything covering your foot? I'm already self-conscious enough about my foot and hardly show it to family and friends so I definitely don't want to be barefoot at work!!

- How bad was the pain? When was it at the worst, just after the surgery or during the turning?

- How long did it take you to get used the crutches? I've never been on them and I'm really nervous about this!

Overall, I'm excited. Only people here can really understand what it's like to be constantly aware of your foot and how it looks. I have 2 young children and being on crutches is going to be really difficult but my husband is fully behind me and supporting me. I'm squeamish so I'm also scared a little of the external device but it will be worth it if it fixes my foot, right??

Hey pk624

I have the condition only on my right foot, and I am currently towards the end of the turning stage. To answer your questions;

My doctor wrapped my foot up with gauzes for the first two weeks, and when I started distracting (turning) he only left the part that I would be turning uncovered.

Just after surgery the pain was low to moderate, just a little throbbing every now and then. This depends a lot on you, if you are active after the surgery then you may have a little more pain. In my case I stayed in bed as much as possible and kept my foot up on pillows. Now that im in the turning stage I feel pain is at its worse.

Im still not fully use to the crutches, i've been walking with them for 3 weeks now. And I praticed a couple of days before the surgery just to get a feel for them. They are nothing you should be nervous about, you will get the hang of it.

Seeing that you have two young children your husband's support will definitely be important. In my case I feel it is worth it, despite everything we have to go through.

FYI,

my doctor got me full disability so I dont have to be at work while I have the fixator.

If you want more info I'm writing a day by day account of my experience. You can go to: myshorttoe.com

I HAD THE SAME CONCERN ABOUT MY FOOT SHOWING. DO NOT STRESS. MY FOOT WAS WRAPPED IN GAUZE AND ALSO IN A BOOT. I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THE PAIN WAS THE WORST RIGHT AFTER THE SURGERY. TURNING THE PINS FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS A LITTLE PAINFUL BUT AFTER THAT IT WAS FINE. AS FAR AS THE CRUTCHES YOU'LL GET USED TO THEM. GOOD LUCK TO YOU WITH YOUR SURGERY!

Hello pk624 :)

I had the same surgery a couple of years back, and the results were great. Now my toe looks almost normal and I am very happy with it. It gave me a lot more confidence.

It was a little strange waking up after surgery and seeing it like that. It was quite sore and I did have a little bit of pain. But it was nothing overwhelming, and I was given some pain killers anyway. I had to keep it elevated to keep the swelling down as well. When I had to do the turning, it didn't hurt the first few times as I was only turning it a little bit, but once I began to turn it more it began to hurt a little. But don't worry, I remember the pain only lasting a couple of seconds then it was over.

When I was first given crutches, I could hardly make it down the corridor, it seemed to go on forever. I had never been on them before though, and I was probably weak anyway :) But I got used to them in no time at all so they should be the last of your worries, just remember to be careful when you're on slippery surfaces on them, as they could unexpectedly slip from beneath you or something.. this only happened to me a couple of times, and I am in England anyway so its raining most of the time..

When the device is on, I gently put a leg warmer sort of thing over it, you can't really wear socks as it would probably be too tight and you wouldn't be able to get it over the device anyway. I'd consider you talking to your Doctor or a nurse about this though, for a safer option.

I'm having surgery this coming January (2010) :) I hope this helped a little, Good luck with your surgery, and don't be worried about it, it's worth it in the end.

Becky
