Hi everyone!

Just a quick question for anyone who has had the surgery. Does, or did anyone have a very, very sensitive feeling in the toe-nail of their brachy toe after surgery? Its not bothering me or anything, but everytime I touch it, like when I paint my toe nails , the brachy toe-nail is so sensitive that it almost hurts! Its that sensitive! Im sure it will go away, because I kinda had the same feeling in my heel for a while, and now the feeling in my heel is letting up, but I think its so strange that my toe nail actually hurts:shock: I might have even filed it down a little myself to much before my surgery, but I just cant tell and was just wondering if anyones had this weird sensation too. Thanks for the replies and hope everyones doing great!!;)

hey brachybratt,

i had the surgery 2 summers ago, and yes, my toenail was sensitive for some time.  Sometimes it would hurt to touch, and other times it was numb.  this was the same for the incision on my ankle.  once you are out of the cast you can work on massaging it to better "desensitize" it.  my guess is that it's the nerves as they are trying to heal...hope this helps!

ps...i am so glad you have been sharing a detailed version of your experience...that will be so helpful for others just finding the site!

Hi  Achybracytoe!

Thank you so much for your reply! That sets my mind at ease a little. I wasnt worried to much about it because its not really affecting me in any way, just weird. And yes, it is so sensitive that it does hurt to the touch sometimes.

Thanks for appreciating the time I take out to share my information. Im always willing to help anyone in anyway I can and since Ive been fortunate enough to have had an excellent experience, I wanted to pass along my information in hopes that others can too. Do you have any pictures posted? Im really interested in seeing your pics;) Did you have your surgery with Dr.Lee, or another Dr..(and if so, what procedure.) Thanks so much again for the info, I really appreciate it! Take care.

Hi Brachybratt,

The toe nail on my brachy toe is also sensitive to touch but is getting less so as time goes on. I am now at 11 weeks post-op and the sensitivity feels better.  Also, the bottom of the brachy toe feels sensitive, like when I rub the bottom of my foot with a towel to dry it.

You are coming up on 6 weeks this Friday and I am at 12 weeks this Friday.  Wow!!

I am not able to start walking until 13 weeks post-op based on my x-ray.  I'll let you know what that feels like.  I hope it's not painful.  I can move my brachy toe a little but it is still stiff.  How is your stiffness?

Hey ddinardo!

Thanks for the reply, I guess thats a normal feeling then, so thats good! One thing I am a little worried about is, I just noticed, on the top of my foot, on the bottom left, about an inch away from the vertical scar, there is a little black dot, very hard to see, kinda almost grayish actually ..well when I run my finger across it, it feels like it may be one of the screws! It doesn't hurt me at all, Im just worried that its starting to pop out of my skin! Its very small, and if I didn't inspect my foot every day, I most likely wouldn't have even noticed it, but Im worried:( I wonder what would happen if your body pushes the screws out on its own? I have a Dr.s appointment here tomorrow, so once he takes some x-rays, Ill have a better idea of what Im dealing with. Im just so worried this screws gonna come through, and then Im gonna have to get another surgery to put it back into place, and be on my crutches even longer. :(

Brachybratt,

Have you accidently step on your foot?  Put any weight on it?  If you have then you should call Dr. Lee?   If you haven't accidently stepped on your foot then I don't think it's the screws.

Are you sure it's not a small circular scab?  I noticed at the top of my vertical scar I had 3 small dots (which were scabs) and I kept saying what the heck are these ?  I think during the surgery Dr. Lee uses a device that leaves 3 small holes ( in a triangular formation).  I just left them alone and the scabs fell off.  Now I have three tiny indents forming a triangle shape at the top of my scar. They are barely visible now.

Let me know what your post-op doc says.

hey brachybratt,

no, i do not have any pics posted...if i can figure it out, i will try to soon...

i had surgery with Dr. Lee...best decision ever!  i also went back for the second procedure months later to have the implant put in my toe (i have old posts that explain more).  my third metatarsal was affected and i had a short toe bone, so i definitely needed the extra length.  i am very happy with my results!  i also completed my 1st ever 10K run in april...something i couldn't have done before surgery because of the pain.  my foot is so much more stable now...

ddinardo,

When I first was on the crutches, and wasn't used to them, I did fall a couple times, but I dont think it was bad enough to push the screws out, ImI tried to take a picture to show you, but its so small, that it wouldn't show up. Its hard to explain what it looks like. At first, I did think it was a scab, and now that I think about it, I do remember seeing something like this  shortly after my surgery and I did wonder if it was a scab. (I cant really remember where it was on my foot though exactly.) It doesn't really feel like what I would think a screw feels like, but then again, Im sure what I have in mind isn't the type of screw thats actually in my foot. Then again, who knows, it may be just like a screw. Like I said, I have my Dr appointment tomorrow, so Ill find out whats going on when he takes my X-rays.

Hi achybrachytoe!

Oh, ok, its good to actually talk to someone who had the 2nd surgery. I may have to consider it myself. I too have the 2 short bones, and although my foot looks 100xs better than it did, it still seems to be a little short. (Im into my 6th week this Friday) and from what I hear, around this time is when you can start to get a good idea of what your foot will look like. Can you please tell me a little bit about the 2nd surgery? Length of stay, pain, how it affected you immediately after? Thank you so much for your information!

Hi Happee!

Aww, thank you! Yes, everything went fine! I just got back from my appointment, and my Dr said I was healing great, and that everything is in place. I showed him that thing on my foot, and asked if it was my screw, he moved it around and said that it wasn't. He said if it was, then it wouldn't have moved around back and fourth. I really don't think he knew what it was, but kinda felt like he had to say something, so he told me it could be pieces of my stitchesthat got stuck under neath my skin. I don't think thats what it is, because my stitches were clear, and you wouldn't be able to see it under my skin.:?

I looked at my x-rays and the screws and plate look very straight and in place, so I don't think its a screw. Its driving me crazy though because I wanna know whats in there:shock: Hopefully whatever it is will push its way out. Now I keep picking at it. I know thats really gross, but Im a popper/picker:? So all in all, it went great, and I don't have to go back for a month!! Yippeee :(

I meant to ask, has your swelling started to go down some yet?  Is the swelling uncomfy?

Hi Curly Head

Welcome to this little world :) I'm happy that you have found your way in here too. I just found the site and the name for this condition last weekend. A whole new world has opened up to me and I too want the surgery done as soon as possible.

Keep us updated! :)

Thank all you girls so much!

Happee,

lol, thats funny. Omg, same here, my b.f runs away from me! He'll be in the bathroom, and I creep in behind him searching his back, and then wont stop until I get it:shock:...my family knows it too, if they have a zit, they better pop it before I get to it, because Im relentless with it, lol.

Oh, about the swelling, its gone down a little bit, but its still pretty swollen,. my b.f calls it Fred Flinstone foot. :? When I keep it up, (which I do alot) its ok, still swollen but not like when Im in the kitchen cooking, then (when its down for a while) it gets red and swollen, and yes, thats when its starts to hurt, well not hurt like pain hurt, more discomfort. Im really hoping my brachy toes gonna get longer, ..its still a little short. Im happy with it, and I personally wouldnt be uncomfortable wearing sandals, but I know if I did someones going to ask me why its shorter, because I think its noticeable. Im not to worried about it though. I mean, theres nothing I can really do so Ill just deal with it after Im done with my right foot.

achybrachy,

As far as your 2nd surgery goes, could you tell me exactly how many millimeters you were off after your 1st surgery? Dr.Lee said I was only off my around 1 millimeter, and I thought for sure since that wasn't much length away, that the length of my brachy toe would be ok, but as im going into my 6th week today, Im noticing that its still a little short. You are the only person I have found so far that has gotten the 2nd surgery, and Im just wondering what length you had to be off to consider the 2nd surgery. Thanks for the info!

hey brachybratt,

The second surgery is a breeze compared to the first.  i flew out (east coast) on a Thurs., had a consult with Dr. Lee in the afternoon, had surgery Fri. morning, relaxed over the weekend, saw him again monday morning and flew home.  You are able to walk on your foot as soon as you are out of surgery, and, while it will be bandaged, you just have to wear one of those lovely blue surgical shoes for a couple of weeks.  Your local dr. can clip the stitches and check it for you.  The pain is minimal compared to the first (i actually stopped pain meds the 2nd day.)

As far as the length goes, i still needed several mm because it was my third toe and my fourth toe was longer (what luck.)  Anyways, there are different size implants depending on how much or how little length you need.  hope this helps...

Achybrachy,

Thank you so much for all that good information! I'd like to ask your opinion on this question. I have to go back out to Phoenix for my right foot. Im around 6 weeks now on the left, so Ill be completely done with my left foot around mid July beginning of August. I plan on going out for the right foot shortly after that. When I go for my surgery on my right foot, do you think its possible to get the 2nd surgery done on my left foot at the same time? Now that I think about it, I bet its not a possibility, because considering my right foot is pretty much gonna be useless, Id have to put all weight on my left, (hopping on it), and I would guess that wouldn't be a good idea. Did you hear anything on this, as far as being able to get the 2nd surgery when you go out for the other?

Hi Kyjenkins78,

The reason I am considering the 2nd surgery, is because I have a short toe bone, AND a short metatarsal, (Dr.Lee said that alot of people have this who have Brachy.) When you have this, it can affect the desired length of your brachy toe. Meaning that your brachy toe could possibly still be a little shorter after surgery.(In my case, Dr.Lee said that I was only 1mm away from perfect length. There is a 2nd surgery Dr.Lee can preform that you can get after your brachy surgery is over that can get that toe a little longer, (I think he puts an implant in the toe.) Im not sure if you are effected by the two short bones or not, but Dr.Lee said that it doesn't matter what surgery you have, (1-stage or external)if you have the short bone and the short metatarsal bone, there is still going to be a chance in the end that your toe wont be long enough. (Some people have a misconception that if you have the external, you wont have this problem at the end, but you will external OR 1-stage. Now, don't get scared because Dr.Lee said usually his patients are happy with the brachy surgery and that most do not go back for the 2nd surgery. I am just considering it because as of now, my toe is still just a tad shorter, (but Im still far from being done, Im only into my 7th week and my foot keeps changing every week, so it may be fine by the time Im done.) Plus, I was only short by 1 millimeter. Also, I think the way my 3rd toe is shaped has alot to do with my brachy toe looking shorter, (my 3rd toe is kinda crooked and may be the reason its making my brachy toe look shorter.) I hope I explained this well enough and it wasn't confusing for you.;)

hey brachybratt,

i do not know if having the implant put in and the 2nd foot done at the same time is a possibility...Dr. Lee will have to answer that question.  If there is a fortunate side to having brachy, i only had my left foot affected, so it made going out for the 2nd surgery a little easier in my case.  I would be interested to know if it was possible, though.

it would be my recommendation to wait until you are walking good on your foot again, and gain some strength in it before going back out for either surgery.  let me know if you have any other questions!
