I also stayed at James Reynolds place, but unfortunatly was on the 2nd floor. i stayed for 16 days and the rental was around 750 if i remember correctly....the surgery was around 6,000, and then you have to add up the plane tickets, food, transportation (i had to take a cab everywhere b/c im too young to rent....that sucked!) and also because i dont have insurance, i also had to pay for the crutches, the xrays before hand to send to dr lee, all of my post-op appointments and xrays, my cast, the walking boot (which was actually given to me by the guy i was sent to....i cried i was so happy, it was gona be like 200)...
so u really have to think about everything related, not just surgery costs...i had the surgery done at the surgery center i think. i didnt know there were other places to go...its just where they told me i had to go.
and also, without insurance the bone stimulator is more then the actual surgery so it wasnt even an option. my bone healed great, the only thing holding me back from walking well is my tendons are too tight from being in the cast for soo long in a flexed position.

today i had my last post op and my doctor said that everything looked great. i have been walking in my walking boot, and can limp barefooted...but its not comfortable to wear sneakers because it is too tight. i think i am going to go buy a wider shoe soon. i still keep my crutches with me just in case my foot starts hurting too much. it does get sore by the end of the day. heres the final pics!!!

Nina,
Your foot looks great ...congratulations for making it through the LONG recovery! I was encouraged to see how well your swelling has gone down. I am at 7 weeks post op and had a cast change last week. My foot and toes were still quite swollen, and my range of motion was extremely limited. I cringe at the thought of putting pressure on my foot when the time comes...hopefully I am half-way there!
I'm curious, are you still using your walking boot all the time? Is it one that supports up to your knee? Are you able to walk comfortably in the boot even though you are limping on bare feet? And does your foot still get that tight, swollen feeling if you've been on it too long? Thanks, and again, your results look awesome!

| Thanks! I am using an air pump boot that only comes up halfway on my calf...maybe even less. i am still using my boot all the time because i feel more comfortable with it right now since i cant wear sneakers because it is just too tight for me. i walk fine in the boot (still a little limp because my tendons are still very tight) but it does hurt by the middle/end of the day if i use it a lot. the part that really get the brunt of the pain is my toe, even though the ankle is still pretty sore. the toe gets pressed on the floor, and before it was pretty pulled downwards. it has come a looong way and sits flush with the others now instead of pulling down, but the metatarsal is still down at an angle, while the toe bone bends up at the joint. so after i use my foot for a while my toe gets a crease in it at the joint from getting pushed upwards for so long. im just so happy that i dont have to rely on my crutches anymore....taking showers a much easier...and i can finally put my weight on my foot in the shower in order to shave the opposite one.

Thanks for the info Nina. I just had my last cast change on Friday and have just 3 more weeks in this cast! i am so excited that it will be coming off at 12 weeks post-op. i am not looking forward to putting pressure on my foot, but i am so glad to be one step closer to recovery. Have you found shoes you are able to wear yet, or is the swelling still too much?
Mid77, wondering how your recovery is going...well, I hope!?

Nina, your foot looks great and it must be so good to be out of the cast already!
I am a little over 8 weeks post up and have a cast change this afternoon actually. I have been feeling great and my swelling has been very minimal for a while now so I hope that continues. I am hoping that today is my last cast change and I can go into the walking boot at my next appointment which I have at 11 weeks post up. I don't want to count on it but I have been making my appointments 3 weeks apart and the one after today will be at 11 weeks.
I'm getting concerned about what shoes to get for after since I won't be able to wear normal shoes for a while. I have an office job so I need to find something that is somewhat dressy and also appropriate for a fall and winter in New England.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any particular types of shoes that are good to start out with.

I just started wearing sneakers today at work instead of my walking boot, and i also got an ace bandage for ankles for more support. it really hurts still. but i am able to get around (with a limp still)....so im just happy that im able to work (im a waitress so im on my feet for like 5-6hours). took me a while to get into sneakers, but if anyone is having trouble you should buy a Wide shoe for more room. hope everyone heals well!!!

Hi everyone,
I wanted to update you all on my progress since my surgery on Aug.3rd.
I had my cast off yesterday (11 weeks post surgery) and now I am in a walking boot. My foot looks great and the scars are not really even visible. I definitely can't walk yet because my ankle is extremely tight and when I put pressure on it, it really hurts. I have been flexing it as much as I can and trying to put a little pressure on it but still use my crutches.
Results are what I expected or actually better. I had both the short toe and short metatarsal so Dr.Lee explained that my fourth toe will probably be the lenght of my fifth toe but it is actually a little bit longer and I think once is it lined up with the others it will look even better. I don't have any swelling left in my foot or leg but I expect to get some again once I start walking on it.
Hope everyone is recovering well and those who have not had the surgery yet and are thinking about it I would highly recommend it if this condition interferes with your daily lives and really bothers you. I know that when you are younger and your feet are still growing you can't do it yet but the positive thing for all of you is that you found out about this surgery very early on so if you plan to get it you'll be able to do it within the next few years.

Hey everyone and congratulations on getting your cast off Mid 77...I got my cast off the same day (12 weeks post op). I have been cleared to walk in the walking boot, but i have yet to even put full pressure on my foot...everything is still really stiff and painful and by the end of the day it's swollen. I am trying to do a little more each day. It will be really nice to get rid of these crutches and have a little more independence.
Recovery has been long, but i will never regret the decision to have this surgery. I will be going back to have the second procedure done to lengthen the toe a little bit more. I had a short third metatarsal bone as well as a short toe bone, so the toe is still a little shorter than my 4th toe...although the results are amazing. It's so different to see all of my toes lined up together. I am so thankful.

Congratulations Achybrachytoe!
Same here not being able to put full pressure on my foot yet. I walk in the walking boot but still with my crutches and try to put some pressure on it to get used to it.
I had the 4th toe done and had a short metatarsal and the short toe bone too and I have not decided yet if I will be going again to do the second precedure to lenthen it more. It is actually a little longer than the 5th toe so it looks great but I will wait until I am fully walking and when my foot is totally back to normal to make the decision.
I do not regret the surgery at all and cannot believe that I have a normal toe now that is in the right place and it's lined up and not sticking up on the top of my foot like before. It is a very long recovery but it's definitely worth it!

| yes, recovery is long. i am so happy with my results! it has been 22 and a half weeks since my surgery and my foot still gets swollen after working all day and is painful to walk on. i wear an ace bandage for my ankle when i wear sneakers to work, but i bring my boot with me still because after a few hours of walking and standing i need more support. i also have a short toe bone, but my results were so good im not going back for another surgery. my toe is still stiff, but it will be a while before it is 100%. glad to hear everyone is doing well!! it took a while for me to get rid of the crutches, but the day will come!

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has gone for physical therapy after your cast was off?

My local doctor wants me to start some physical therapy when i go back for a check up in a week and a half. Mostly to help get some muscle built back up in my lower leg. He wanted me to be in the walking cast for a couple of weeks before starting.
I am also interested to know if anyone else did physical therapy after their surgeries. If so...for how long?

I wanted to update everyone on my progress. I had the cast taken off 11 weeks post up and the first week in the walking boot I still used crutches due to foot pain and tight ankle etc. Beginning of this week though which is my 2nd week in the walking boot I can get around without crutches which is great. My foot still hurts and I limp around but it feels much better than last week and the more I walk on it the more flexible my foot gets so I'm hoping I'm a week or so away from a regular walking shoe but we'll see.
It is a very long recovery but I am surprised on how fast it has gone by now looking back at it. For those of you considering the surgery but are hesitant due to the lenght of time off your feet I would recommend just thinking about the end result because it is worth it and only a few months out of your lifetime with the inconvenience of a cast.
Those of you who used the bone stimulator how long did you continue to keep using it?
I still use it now but not sure how much longer it is necessary.

Hello, I would like to say your foot looks great and I was wondering if you did the one step procedure or the external fixator? I am 26 years old and I am so nervous to get this surgery done and I am afraid of the risks involved.
Please let me know which procedure you went with so it can help me make up my mind. And your feet look beautiful I am so so happy for you that its bringing me to tears.
