hello.

Does anyone know of a good doctor who does external fixator surgery in the San Fernando Valley or Los Angeles, CA?

Hi chaniqua,
Yes, Dr. Stanley Mathis did an excellent job with my external fixator surgery last year. He works in Los Angeles and I definitely recommend him.

THANK YOU SO MUCH LUCKYFIN. I actually went to a podiatrist and he suggested I "cut off" my toe "if it hurts." I was so upset. Anyway, about how long did you have the device? Was it painful? Thanks!

I had the device on for about 3 months. Yes, it is very painful but considering what your bone is actually doing- it is to be expected. However, you don't feel the pain 24/7 and people have different tolerances for pain. I'd say for me personally, it only hurt when I was turning the device... so 3 weeks or so? Dr. Mathis has done other external fixator surgeries and bone grafting, so hes experienced with brachymetatarsia. He answered every question I had before the surgery and explained all the steps necessary through the recovery. I am so grateful for him to have done such a fantastic job.

How much did it cost? Did your insurance cover for it? I just called my health care provider and asked if I could get refered to him, but I can't because i live in a different region and he is not contracted with my health insurance. Is there anyway I can contact him (e-mail/phone number) for a consultation.

Thanks for your fast reply.

Yes, my insurance (HMO) paid for everything, except the hospital admittance which cost me $125. His office is (323) 987-1362 and ask for his nurse to set up a consultation.

Hi LuckyLeaf,

I called for an appointment with Dr. Mathis and was also told he wasn't available until November. They offered me an appointment with the new dr., but I declined. They are starting to take some of Dr. Mathis's appointments and schedule them with the new doctor, so he has times opening up. I called back the next day and was able to get an appointment on Sept. 22. Try again and perhaps you can get your appointment moved up as well. Good luck and I will let you know how my appointment goes!

Thanks Dynagirl, i maybe should of declined, but since my appointment is tomorrow, would that be too late to cancel the appointment. I do not want to make a bad impression at the office. And good luck with your consultation, all the best.

Hey Dyna, i met with the new doctor and he seems to know what he is talking about, he recommended the external fix, and he answered all of my questions. He also said that i would only need a splint type cast on my foot for two weeks and i could walk on it.

Hi LuckyLeaf,

Wow! It sounds like your appointment went great! Did you schedule your procedure or are you still trying to decide? It's amazing that you can walk on it that quickly. Keep me posted on your progress. As I said, my appointment is on 9/22, so I will let you know how it goes.

Are the fires anywhere near you? I hope that all is okay.

I had my x rays done and the Doctor Spencer will get back to me next week. I have a good feeling about this doc. You have Mathis for your appointment right? I wanted him, but they said he was busy. Good luck with your appointment, I was told that my doc is all booked for October 2nd, so the soonest I would be able to get an appointment would be the end of October or early November. Here is hoping that someone cancels.

Also the fires suck, but I am in Orange County so aside from the heat that we are all feeling it is all good. Where are you from?

LuckyLeaf,

Yes, my appointment is with Dr. Mathis. I live in San Diego, so it will be a bit of a drive for me. I am not looking forward to that L.A. traffic, but it will be worth it to have the consultation. I already have x-rays that I am taking with me (I saw 2 doctors here in San Diego, but neither of them had much experience with the one-stage or external fix procedures). If I am a good candidate for the surgery, I am hoping I get it done in November.

Keep me up-to-date on the progress of getting scheduled your procedure scheduled.

BTW Chaniqua, how did it go with you? Did you meet with Dr. Mathis and get the surgery done external or one-stage? If so, how much did it cost with or with out insurance?

So just for an update,

I spoke to my doctor and he said that I need about 1.5 cm or 15 mm increase for my fourth metatarsal. They are currently working with my insurance, so everything is in motion. He said the next time that I would see him would be for the pre-op meeting and physical.

Hey Dyna, thought I would give an update.

I am scheduled for my brachy surgery for the ex fix on October 2nd, I will need to get a physical and a pre-op appointment before then, but in less than 2 weeks I should have that thing on my foot. My doctor said that the bone graft was a possibility, but he said that the ex fix would be his recommendation.

Your appointment is on Tuesday right? Good Luck and keep us updated.

Hi LuckyLeaf,

Wow!  Your surgery is scheduled!  I am very excited for you.  I am encouraged that you didn't have to wait too long after your first appointment to get the procedure scheduled.  Yes, my appointment is on Tuesday, and I am very anxious to go.  I would like to see if I can have the procedure done in mid-November, because I have a vacation scheduled at the end of October.  I don't know if I had mentioned this, but I have brachy on both feet.  I will do the left first.  I will let you know how my appointment goes.

Hi LuckyLeaf,

I had my appointment today and I really liked Dr. Mathis.  He spent a lot of time talking to me and my husband and answering all of our questions.  He gave me quite a bit of information.  He did tell me however, that it probably isn't practical for him to do my surgery because we live in San Diego.  Based on the frequency of the follow-up appointments, it would probably be too difficult (it took us two hours to get there with pretty much no traffic).  The good news is that he has a colleague in San Diego who is a good friend of his, and he is going to refer me to that dr.  He was going to call the San Diego dr. today and have them call me for an appointment.  So, I have to wait just a little longer.
