Dr. Lee,
I am a 29 year old who has Brachymetatarsia on my left foot. I had no idea that's what I had or exactly why my foot looked so different until tonight. I live in Tampa Bay,Florida. Is there any place in Florida that you would suggest me to go where I could get my toe corrected? I am so excited to finally KNOW that what I have has a name, so that I can do more research! Please, help me with your advice.
Thank you!
Patricia

Hi Patricia
There is a very good doctor, his name is Dror Paley, he's in West Palm Beach, he used to be in Baltimore, MD. A few people from this forum went to him and were very happy with the results. This is his website
http://www.limblengtheningdoc.org.
He does external fixator. Good luck, let me know if you decide to contact him.

Thank you for the info! I will take it into consideration! However, I still want to do more research about the whole thing, I'm not sure about the external fixator. The one stage lenghtning surgery seems less traumatic, and leaves a less visible scars, so I am leaning towards that procedure, but I will have to study the possibilities better. Do you know any other doctors in Florida that do the one stage lenghtning surgery?

Thanks so much!

I am pretty sure that Dr Lee is the only one who does 1 stage surgery, everyone who asked him on this forum if there is another Dr who does the procedure, his reply "NO" he's the only one in the US.

hi Patricia

what part of Tampa are you from? I'm also from Tampa. I'm scheduled to have my surgery done on 9/15/09 with Dr Lee and I'm really looking forward to it. i was also trying to find a doctor in Tampa who could do the 1 stage but Dr Lee said that  he never knew of any in Tampa.  most of them only do the external fixator. good luck in deciding which one you  will choose to do if you need any info just let me know

Hi Loren,
I live in St. Petersburg. It is so nice to hear from people going through what I went through (and am still going through) my whole life. I felt like a little weirdo sometimes, I had no idea other had what I had. I learned about Brachymetatarsia last night!!! Good luck on your surgery! I hope all goes well! I'd like to hear more from you after you're done with the surgery. Also I'm very interested about the costs of the procedure, and would very much like to get in contact with Dr. Lee. I probably cannot afford the surgery right now, but it is something worth saving money for!

Good luck!

hi Patricia

i live in zephyr hills so we are not to far from each other. i know how you feel i also thought i was the only one who had this up until last year when i stumbled upon this website. and all i have been wanting to do is get it corrected so i can finally show off my feet. you were asking about the cost for the procedure my insurance is covering it 100% all i have to pay is the deduct able, and i believe that almost all insurances do cover it. but if you do not have insurance than i read on here that it costs between $7000 and $8000 to get one foot  done.  well if you have anymore questions that you need me to answer let me know and I'll defiantly keep you updated once i have my surgery good luck to you as well.

It is such good news that insurance will cover it! I'll look into it! Good luck again on your coming surgery, please let me know how it goes. I'm very excited for you. I have sooo many questions! I wish we could chat or talk on the phone some time, but i think I'm not allowed to post phone numbers or email addresses on this forum :(

Have a wonderful day, Loren!

Actually, the precise answer to this is that I don't know of any other surgeons who specialize in one stage, or know of anyone who has extensive  (more than a few) experience.  I'm sure there are surgeons who may do this procedure. I just don't know who they may be and how experienced they are.

hi Mary

I'm so sorry that i am only replying to your email now but i just arrived home on Tuesday the 9/22  from phoenix and it has taken me a little longer than usual to get back into things. thank you so much for wishing me all the best i was really nervous at the time but like you say Dr Lee is  great he really made me feel at ease about the whole operation and it really all went well. and also to mention the staff at the arrowhead hospital they are also great. well I'm glad that the surgery is all over. now all i need to do is to get fully recovered. it is a little difficult trying to get around on one foot but I'm  sure it will all get better. I'm  so glad to hear that all went well with yours if you could please tell me how long after your surgery did your foot feel some what better and also how long were you in a cast for thanks for everything hope to hear from you soon

I did not have a surgery yet, 1 stage sounds so much easier than ex-fix, but I don't have anyone to travel w/me to Arizona. Did you have someone go with you to AZ. How long do you have to stay in a cast. thank you

hi rightandleft

my husband traveled with me to Arizona which was really a great help and you need to be in a cast for 10-12 weeks depending on when the heel bone is 100% healed my post op doctor is going to check it around the 11 week to see if i'm ready for the walking boot. if you need anymore info don't hesitate to ask. are you considering going with Dr Lee. you will be really happy with him as i know you will be in great hands he is really great at what he does and there if you need to ask any questions.

Dr. Lee... I am a 13 year old in Florida and 4 toes on my right foot are small and some do not have toe nails.  Is this something that can be corrected with surgery?
