Anyone out there that has done the external fixator survery? If so.... How long from surgery date to the time you actually walked in normal shoes? Also, how many millimeters did you lengthen to achieve satisfactory results?
Thanks so much!

Hi Tember22 im so glad you replyed..... im so happy that everythings going well 4 you. I can imagine how you feel that you have already started the healing process........ I havnt even began anything that ok but when i have the money and time i will defenantly travel to arizona and begin. Im having mine with Dr Lee, I have looked up everything about him and I really really like him so much because hes the person thats making all this possible for people and because of him people have now found out that they are not alone and that there is hope..... he is a truly wonderful person for his profession and his personality. He has changed peoples whole lives.
I would'nt have this surgery done by any1 else because I feel that because I found Dr Lee first and he has lots of years of experience with this I can only trust him 2 do the best job. I would'nt want 2 have 2 go through any other surgerys if there were 2 be any complications. I want 2 do it with the best Dr because I only want 2 have it done once and in the proper and best way and i feel that I can trust Dr Lee 2 do it the best way..........
Tember22 if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for the surgery?

Hi jns,
I actually had the external fixator surgery done on Jan 28, 2008. Things are going really well and I can see such a difference in my toe length. The Dr. here in TX is amazing and has been excellent. I see him once a week every week until the fixator comes off in late March. I have to lengthen ~18mm so it's a bit of a long road, but the surgeon I am with uses an innovative technique in which he only has to creat an incision that is half an inch long and everything is done through there so I will have little to no scarring, which is super! It is painful each day, but is all well worth it to be able to have a more normal foot. Are you planning on the one stage with Dr. Lee in AZ?

Hi Tember
Wow thats great to hear that your doing good. It must be wonderful to know that you can lengthen it that much and also that you wont have a big scare....... Im truly really happy for you. I personally am not worried about the pain or anything else but the only thing Im kinda worried about is the scarring! I mean the scares of the pictures I have seen of people who have had the 1 stage done arnt that bad but I wish that they werent as long..... anyway I would still prefer to have the scare that the weird toe, besides the scare would fade and not be so noticeable after a while.
Oh and yeah Iv decided to have the one stage procedure, I only need about 12mm lengthened so the 1 the stage is better for me!
Plz keep us posted I would love to know how things go with you, thanks for your reply and once again Im really happy for you.

Hi jns,
Thanks so much for your nice post!! As far as the scarring goes.... I will have about a half inch scar on the top of my foot and that's it. The one stage lengthen looks great since you have 12mm to lengthen. It really is amazing to see the results so I wish you much luck and a speedy recovery from your surgery. Take care and stay in touch.

Cherise67 - Hi. I am also from the Chicagoland area. Just wondering if you have looked into seeing a specialist in the area?
I met with my primary doc on Monday to see if she could point me in the right direction - was NOT helpful at all. I have suffered from debilitating leg pain mainly on the side that I have the brachy. Weird coincidence right. She completely dismissed my concerns. She wants me to go see a sports medicine specialist. Why can't docs just admit that they don't have a clue!

Hi Cherise67 and jujubee,
I live in Chicago as well, and have brachy bilaterally. Most doctors, even specialists (podiatrists) have no clue of what it is and that it has a name. I've seen a podiatrist in the Hyde Park area a couple of times for foot fungus treatment, and her facility has a surgery center. I was asking her assistant if she'd ever seen anyone with feet like mine before, and she told me the doc had corrected a woman's toe with the external fixator there.
The doc and I had talked briefly about me correcting my toes with it, but I'd like to talk to the patient (or patients) she's performed the external fixator procedure on first. Although I know this doc and her colleagues are very reputable, I want to find out firsthand. If either of you would like to check it out let me know.

Hi JuJuBee, I had my short toe corrected here in Chicago on January 30, 2008 by Dr. Frankel <edited by moderator>. my foot looks GREATTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!
I no longer have to worry about people staring at my feet!
Dr. Frankel took a piece of my bone from my fifth metatarsal and extended my fourth metatarsal, he then inserted pins in each toe to hold the bone together to heal, the pins were a little painful at times, I had the pins in for about 8 weeks I wore the surgical boots for 12 weeks total, I am now wearing my shoes, I have been out shopping up a storm for cutesy sandals and yes I am flip flopping it up!!
If you want more info. on Dr. Frankel send me an email at (deleted).

I'm glad that your feet look great. As a surgeon who has seen many different techniques, I don't recommend this technique as it changes the long term function of the foot. Shortening the fifth metatarsal often results in long term instability of the outside (lateral ) foot and can lead to foot pain commonly .
Sorry I had to delete your email , but due to problems in the past we must for legal reasons, do our best to protect you.

Dear Funkyfeet,
You have two choices: external fixation or one-stage correction that are both proven techniques. Please contact me by email through the website and I can forward you information on this. Thanks for posting.

| People just don't understand your situation. It's sad but true that most doctors dismiss this. What if the problem was a huge nose like or a half nose. What would they say?

Hi Cherise67. Thank you for your reply. Sorry it has been a while but I battled breast cancer last year and I am wrapping up that chapter in my life. Now I am more determined to get this done.
Dr. Frankel, is he in Chicago? I am having trouble finding someone who will perform the post-op work after Dr. Lee's surgery. My PCP says that it is a liability issue. I did see an orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Holmes who is well know in the area for foot/leg issues. I believe he is the team doc for the Bulls.
Well, I hope that you are well. Please keep me updated on your progress.

Hi numnine60637. Thanks for sharing. Do you know if your doc and college are willing to perform Dr. Lee's post-op work? I really think going with Dr. Lee is the right choice for me.
Thanks for you input. What is your doc's name?

Dr. Lee- I saw you reply to FunkyFeet who has the condition on both feet as I do.
Can you/will you do both feet at the same time?

| I’m so glad I finally found people with the same toe problem I have! I’m 21 years old and have brachymetatarsia (didn’t know there was a name for it until now!) on my right foot only. As many of you have said, it has made me self-conscience since it began being very noticable, during childhood. I don’t own a pair of flip flops because I hate the way my feet look. I’m in college and don’t even feel comfortable walking barefoot around my roommate so I wear socks all the time. My feet are just ugly and I have bunions as well and am beginning to notice toe nail fungus. Its very embarrassing! On Wed June 11th I went in for bunion surgery and also had an external fixator attached on my fourth toe. my podiatrist said this device would make the bone in my toe grow. He said 10 days after the surgery I would begin to turn the device with a wrench he gives me 4 times a day. I really hope this works and that my bunion surgery recovery goes well also! I will let yall know how everything goes!

Hi Jujubee,
Sorry for responding late, but I haven't been on in a while. I'm not sure if the podiatrist I visit will be willing to do the post-op work, but you can call or visit to inquire yourself.
The doctor's name is Fortunee Massuda, and the site is: http://www.footexperts.com/
You should be able to locate the number on there. Let me know what happens.

Hi numnine60637. Thanks for your response. I am actually schedule to have the surgery performed by Dr. Lee in one month. Can't wait but still having a lot of trouble setting up post-op care. It's amazing. Don't know what to do. I may just have to call every single podiatrist in the area.
Hope you are well.

Hi all,
I'm new here.
When I discovered that our condition has a name, can be corrected, and others have it, I nearly cried.
Like many of you, I have been so embarrased of my feet for so many years.
When swimming I either cover it up with medical tape or wear water shoes. I onyl wear sandals that show the first toes. I never walk barefoot around others except for my husband.
When I first went to an ortho surgeon here in Canada, he told me to get ortho shoes and then went to see his next patient. Very disruptive. And discouraging.
Finding out that this can be fixed has changed my life, literally. People don't understand how limiting this condition is, how much it affects everything you do.
I contacted Dr. Lee and got the info to get it rolling today, and I can't wait.
I have already told my work I am taking 2 weeks off to go get the surgery. I will do it as soon as I can get my doctor to get the info I need, and find a podiatrist locally to do my follow up. I'd do it yesterday if I could.
I am petrified of being put under, but even that won't stop me. I am on cloud 9.
I am so glad I am not alone in this anymore.

Congrats Brachygirl & jujubee on getting things going to correct your toes. I can't wait until I muscle up enough strength (& dollars) to do mine.
Jujubee: Have you contacted that podiatrist in Hyde Park for your post-op care?

| Hello, as parents we first noticed that our daughter's toe was different was around age 5, then as the years past it was becoming more and more noticeable. She is 12 now and it certainly has affected how she feels about herself. She is such a humble little kid with such a good attitude, but I find her feeling down about this condition especially as the hot weather comes and summer is here. I try to encourage her and make her feel good about herself, she is a beautiful girl inside and out and I tell her there could be worse things in life. There is nothing like having perfect health, but for me it is easy to say this because I do not have to deal with this issue. On top of this she has pronation in both of her feet. She has the shorty toe on her right foot--4th metatarsal. Is there any advice you can give me to help my daughter get thru this age where it seems the pressures of getting close to teen age years and what other kids will think become an issue. She has hid this problem for some time now and as parents we have helped her to avoid her being in any situation where she could be embarrassed and devastated to where it can have a long lasting effect on how she feels about who she is as a person. As a parent, I know there are worse things in life, but I find myself so saddened by this and I cry alot especially when I know she is hurting. No parent wants to see their children in pain, and or hurt by anything or anyone. I emailed Dr. Lee on her problem sometime back and we plan to do the surgery on her but when her feet stop growing. Does anyone know at what age feet stop growing for children? Also does anyone have children or do you experience the same problem combined with pronation severe or moderate? I would love to get your advice as a parent on how to handle this sensitive situation with my daughter to ensure I give her the best advice possible.

Wow! This feeling of not being all alone in the world with a stupid short toe is amazing.
I am 28 years old and up until two hours ago I didn't even know that there was actually a name for this condition. It has a name and all of you guys out there really understand how I feel and have felt for as long as I can remember. Always conscious about hiding away my feet... looking at everybody else's perfect toes... the desire to be free and able to walk around with bare feet without this huge knot in my stomach.
I am so happy to know that I am not alone and that something can actually be done! I am so excited by the thought of getting surgery done and get out of this prison! I live in Denmark and have to find out where I can get this surgery done - but trust me... I am willing to travel to the other side of the world if I have to :-D
I'm so happy that I know now of this forum and I hope to be part of it. Last edited on Fri Jun 5th, 2009 10:16 pm by Hope |
